Expectations for another interest\nrate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve, which is scheduled to announce its\nmonetary policy decision on Wednesday, also boosted investor sentiment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative\nsaid Monday that Washington will consider whether to extend certain tariff\nsuspensions on $34 billion worth of imports from China that are set to expire\non December 28 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainland Chinese stocks also fell by the\nafternoon. The Shanghai composite shed 0.4% and the Shenzhen component was\nfractionally lower. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong reversed earlier gains as\nit declined 0.3%, with Hong Kong-listed shares of HSBC dropping 1.5% after the\nlender reported third-quarter pre-tax profits that dropped 18% year-on-year. South\nKorea\u2019s Kospi traded 0.1% lower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P\/ASX 200 in Australia rose 0.1%.\nIn Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 0.4% while the Topix gained 0.9%. Shares of\nairliner ANA, however, fell more than 0.5% following a Nikkei report that the\nfirm is expected to report a more than 20% drop in profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The embrace of risk left bonds out in the\ncold, and yields on two-year Treasury notes hit four-week highs at 1.667%. The\nshift from safe havens was working to weaken the yen. The dollar was firm at\n108.98 yen, having reached its highest in three months, and was eyeing a major\ntop at 109.31. Sterling firmed after the European Union agreed to a Brexit\ndelay of up to three months, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson lost a vote to\nforce an election on Dec. 12.
